About The Diploma

Diplomas are being introduced following a commitment made in 2005 by the government.

They are new qualifications for 14-19 year olds that will provide a broad programme of applied and other learning, underpinned by essential skills.

Employers want young people with good skills, particularly in the basics, and the ability to apply these. They want young people who have some experience of work and are able to make well-informed career choices.

Young people who achieve a Diploma will be able to meet these expectations because they will have succeeded across a programme of learning covering English, Maths and ICT, employability skills such as team working and problem solving, and the work skills and knowledge needed to succeed in many industries including engineering.

The diploma content specification for the Engineering Diploma was  submitted to the government (SSDA) in June 2006, along with an annex which outlines the Specialised and Additional learning.   QCA published an updated specification document in late 2006 which gives details proposals for qualification content and structure.  This document should be seen as indicative only as final curriculum and assessment have yet to be finalised by Awarding Bodies.

An employer guide gives a summary of the benefits and content of the Engineering Diploma.  A guide to work related learning provides guidance to employers on how they can support the Diploma and help shape future generations of engineers.
