The Diploma in Engineering will give your
child a fascinating insight into the world of engineering without
closing doors to other careers. Engineering applies mathematical
and scientific knowledge to practical problems across a range of
disciplines. Engineering is the third highest earning career after
law and medicine and can often lead on to jobs in other
professions. It’s a good solid career choice for your child.
The Diploma will be valued by employers and
universities because it combines the best of traditional academic
qualifications and practical and work-related experience.
It’s been developed over several years with
universities, employers, schools, colleges, and many others.
It’s part of a national programme so will be
recognised throughout the country.
Students can select options as part of their
Diploma. Options allow young people to specialise or study subjects
outside engineering, such as a language, art or history.
The Diplomas will be worth the following:
- Foundation (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D to G)
- Higher (equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* to C)
- Advanced (equivalent to 3.5 A Levels, worth 420 UCAS
points)
There is also a Progression level Diploma, which is like the
Advanced Diploma, but without various options, and is equivalent to
2 A Levels. It is worth 300 UCAS points.
There is also an Extended Diploma, which has more generic and
additional and specialist learning. It will be available from
2011.
The Diploma in Engineering can lead to a wide
range of further options: college, A Levels, university, further
training, employment or apprenticeships.
The Diploma is new and different.
If you want your child to have a rounded
education with an insight into a challenging and exciting industry
that will be useful to them whatever direction they wish to take,
